Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma.
  • South Carolina School Bus Certificate, Commercial Driver’s License (Class B, with all required endorsements), South Carolina Driver’s License.
  • All other requirements as set forth by the South Carolina Department of Education.
  • Must possess skills in preparing route descriptions and read and produce route maps.
  • Prior job experience required.

Job Goal:

 

To enable the Transportation Program to continue providing safe and uninterrupted transportation for our students to school, back home, and on extracurricular trips, as to enable each child the opportunity to pursue his education.

 

Job Functions:

  • Reports to the building principal, bus supervisor, or school secretary upon arrival at the school building.
  • Reviews with the principal, department head, bus supervisor, or school secretary, the day’s job assignments and/ or locations.
  • Completes a route description/ map of all routes in the area by riding with each bus driver so as to be familiar with each route and geographical area.
  • Consults with local bus supervisor as to supervisor as to suggested improvements that will result in safer and more economical bus operation, and gives assistance in planning bus routes and schedules, if requested.
  • Acts as a bus monitor on various school buses and reports to school officials any misconduct on the part of the students.
  • Completes a route description and map of assigned route annually or as needed.
  • Provides written reports of road hazards on assigned routes.
  • Assigns students to seats and maintains an up-to-date status of students in card file at transportation office.
  • Attends safety meetings as scheduled.
  • Uses all safety material and equipment as provided.
  • Follows all state and local laws and regulations and school district policies.
  • Follows carefully all laws and regulations governing the operation of all school buses.
  • Assists new bus drivers in learning the rules and regulations that govern school bus operation, and assists new drivers in making reports.
  • Supervisor may assign other duties as needed.

Physical Requirements:

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, stand and reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel, and crouch. Duties may involve risk resulting from attending to students’ behavioral needs.

Additional physical requirements include the following:

  • Physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 40 pounds.
  • Sufficiently mobile to ensure the safety of students.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
