Job Summary:

 

Under immediate supervision, performs work of routine difficulty assisting children safely across streets and assisting other citizens as needed. Responsible for directing traffic at an assigned intersection in order to afford maximum protection to children going to and returning from school. Responsible for reporting problems requiring possible police action.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required.
  • Valid SC Driver’s License.
  • Must be 18 years of age. Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies, traffic control techniques, basic traffic laws and safety procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to direct school children enroute to and from school in crossing the street.
  • Ability to safeguard school children at intersections.
  • Ability to recognize traffic hazards.
  • Ability to make decisions for the control of traffic and for the safe conduct of school children.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school children, parents, school personnel and general public.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Exercises good customer service techniques, such as listening, effective communications and problem solving, (i.e., acts according to the county’s customer service standard.)
  • Communicates and interacts with co-workers, supervisors, department heads and other county offices, school children, parents, school personnel and general public.
  • Patrols at designated school crossing near designated schools directing children safely across streets.
  • Controls school crossings, street traffic, and the conduct of school children and selects safe crossing times.
  • Report incidents or dangerous situations to supervisor.
  • Give directions and aid citizens as needed.
  • Aid in traffic control.
  • Report any chronically bad driver or vehicular violation to supervisor or Law Enforcement.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and/or signal people to convey or exchange information; reach with arms and hands; use hands or fingers to operate, handle or feel objects, tools or controls.

Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computer and various office equipment.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and ability to focus.
