Job Title: Teacher Special Education - (Autism or Multi-Cat Certified)

 

Supervisor: Principal/Special Education Administrator  

 

FLSA: Exempt

 

Term of Employment: 190 days 

 

Job Summary:

Working with students who have learning, mental, emotional, or physical disabilities by planning, organizing, assessing, evaluating, researching, implementing the appropriate instructional program to address the learning needs of the students; to guide and encourage students to develop and fulfill their potential in both academic and extracurricular activities. 

 

Qualifications:

  • Degree(s) required and area of major study from an accredited college or university
  • South Carolina Teacher Certification in ED, LD and/or Multi-Cat
  • Prior job experience preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as district administration may find appropriate and acceptable

Essential Duties:

  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the student 
  • Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures, maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner 
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students 
  • Develops lesson plans and organizes daily classes so that demonstration, instruction, and practice can be developed within the allotted time 
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals  
  • Uses a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media to meet the needs and capabilities of the students involved in the learning activities 
  • Diagnoses the learning abilities of students on a regular basis 
  • Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrations’ regulations 
  • Instructs students in use, care, and safe operation of equipment  
  • Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required 
  • Serves as a role model for students 
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities 
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress 
  • Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day 
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs 
  • Works cooperatively with classroom teachers when appropriate 
  • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social, and personal concerns of such students 
  • Assists other professional staff members in resolving the unique psychological or disciplinary problems of each student 
  • Assists in screening, evaluating, and recommending placement of students 
  • Counsels individuals and groups of students with educational, occupational, and personal problems 
  • Assists students in making realistic assessment of his abilities and in establishing educational and occupational goals in keeping with these abilities 
  • Attends IEP meetings as deemed necessary and prepares behavioral intervention plans for specified students 
  • Supervisor may assign other related duties as needed 

Other Duties:
Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
